Final Hearing for Mickey the Pit Bull

A final hearing has been scheduled for the pit bull named Mickey, made infamous for attacking 4-year old Kevin Vicente in February and leaving him with a broken eye socket and jaw.

April 29 Hearing Date Set for Mickey the Pit Bull

On April 29th a judge is expected to decide where the dog will finally be sent. Until that final order is issued the dog will remain under the care of Maricopa County Animal Care and Control.

In a previous hearing, Municipal Court Judge Deborah Griffin declared the dog vicious. She could have ordered euthanasia, but she ruled Mickey must be neutered, defanged, and micro-chipped.

Guadalupe Villa was at the scene and petitioned that the dog be euthanized.

Improvements for Mickey

Pit bulls have recently received a reputation for being a dangerous breed, but their fans dispute that often times blaming the owners for negligence and incorrect training. “He’s put on weight since he’s been here; I personally go in and give him treats every day,” said Melissa Gable, spokesperson for Maricopa County Animal Care and Control

Both Sides of Argument in Pit Bull Attack

The case set off protests from both sides of the argument. Thousands of animal lovers took to social media and protests in support of Mickey, placing blame on not only the dog’s owners but also on the child’s baby sitter. A Facebook page called “Save Mickey” received more than 60,000 likes. A petition created to spare his life had 50,000 signatures. Supporters say that the support for the dog does not mean they do not value the dog’s life. John Schill, the attorney that represented Mickey in court says, “This is not Kevin versus Mickey. Having Micky killed is not going to take away Kevin’s pain or injuries. The only thing this is going to do is kill a poor, innocent dog.” Kevin Vicente also received thousands of supporters – a fundraising page was set up to help out with his medical bills.
