  • Update on Pit Bull Mauling Victim

It was a happier Christmas for Kevin Vicente, the 4-year old boy who was mauled by a pit bull mix named Mickey.

Donations to Victim of Dog Mauling

Right before Christmas, concerned donors took to the Internet to raise more than $21,000 to help cover Vicente’s medical expenses. The contributions including one anonymous donation of $13,000. The initial goal of $20,000 was met in just over 10 days. Vicente was mauled by the now infamous pit bull, Mickey, on February 20, 2014.

Dog Mauling Incident

The attack happened when Vicente was playing with other children in a yard. The boy walked within the 18-foot radius of Mickey’s chain. The pit bull then caught the boy from behind, pulled him to the ground, and began attacking his face. Adults nearby were able to pull the pit bull off the boy.

Mickey the Pit Bull

The story ignited social media and advocates for pit bulls in an effort to save Mickey’s life. A local attorney donated his time to represent Mickey, while a New York-based non-profit raised money to pay for the dog’s legal expenses. It was decided that the dog be housed in a no-kill shelter, under the supervision of  Sheriff Joe Arpaio. Meanwhile, Kevin’s mother was forced to leave her job in order to care for her son. Luckily, the donations will help to pay for the boy’s upcoming surgery bills.
