A wrong way car car accident west of downtown Phoenix closed the eastbound lanes of Interstate 10 during the morning rush hour. According to officials, the wrong way car accident also sent four people to local hospitals with injuries that ranged from serious to critical.

The wrong way crash occurred early in the morning. According to Raul Garcia, an Arizona Department of Public Safety spokesman, around 2 a.m. police received emergency calls about a car driving westbound in the eastbound lanes of I-10 near State Route 143.

Around 2:08 a.m., the car, still driving against traffic in the eastbound lanes, collided with another car near Seventh Avenue. Just after the collision, three other cars drove through the wreckage, hitting debris and the two vehicles that were involved in the initial car accident.

The Driver

According to Garcia, police suspect the 25-year-old female driver was impaired and most likely under the influence. All four drivers involved in the accident were taken to Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center.
